Golden Retriever: which types it suits

Dog

Believes everyone loves it. Is mostly right

The golden retriever was bred in 19th-century Scotland to fetch shot waterfowl without damaging them. That soft mouth and the love of water never left the breed, which is why so many goldens still treat every park fountain as a personal invitation. It is far too friendly with strangers to be much of a guard dog, but it has long been a first choice for guide and therapy work.

Read as a personality, the golden runs on warmth as its default setting. One word of praise gets a whole-body response, it wedges itself into any room where the family gathers, and a single ball can carry it through an hour. The body is fully grown by two or three, but the puppy energy hangs around for years, so you get large-dog strength with toddler enthusiasm. Left alone too long, it tends to take the loneliness out on shoes and cushions.
