Pilates: which types it suits

Studio

Small movements, done exactly right, turn out to be addictive

Pilates is a series of precise, controlled movements done with the breath, either on a mat or on equipment like the reformer. The movements themselves aren't big, but the instructor talks you through angles and sequences in such detail that your attention stays locked in for the full hour. Equipment classes are often small groups or one-to-one, so you get to know the instructor well, and most studios run bookings through an app.

Pilates suits people who feel a real sense of achievement from getting one movement exactly right, and who like clear, detailed instructions. There's no scoring or competition, so it's easy to progress at your own pace, and many people stay with the same instructor at the same time slot for years. Some people say what they love most is that the constant cues leave no room for other thoughts to wander in. It particularly suits anyone whose booking calendar doubles as the rhythm of their week.
