Cockatiel: which types it suits

Bird

The crest reports the mood. The beak is busy singing

The cockatiel is a parrot from Australia, known for its crest of head feathers and orange cheek patches. The crest stands up or lies flat with its mood, which makes its feelings easy to read, and it is better at copying whistles and melodies than words. With good care it can live 15 to 20 years or more.

Read as a personality, the cockatiel is an affectionate, mild-mannered companion. It bows its head to ask for scratches and enjoys following its favourite person around and staying close. It is on the timid side, so a sudden noise or light at night can send it thrashing in the cage, and a dim night light helps. It is also a dusty bird that sheds fine feather powder, so the area around the cage needs frequent cleaning.
